Devereux Emmet’s masterpiece at St. George’s Golf & Country Club has been revitalized through a meticulous restoration by Gil Hanse. The project reclaimed fairway width and putting surface contours, returning the course to Emmet’s original vision. At just 6,408 yards, St. George’s is not long by modern standards, but its thoughtful design provides both challenge and enjoyment. Built as a friendly response to C.B. Macdonald’s National Golf Links of America, St. George’s reflects the close friendship and rivalry between Emmet and Macdonald. Emmet, one of National’s founding members, created this course near his own estate with a group of investors, ensuring its place as a standout in the history of American golf architecture.
